How to grow borage from seeds ?
The borage herb is a beautiful bright starry blue flower with cucumber-flavored leaves. They are perfect for tea and other beverages, or even for decorating salads. Borage flowers are great for the ecosystem since they bring pollinators to your veggies.
Care: easy • Exposure: sunny to half shade during summer • Watering: medium to regular during summer • Where? In a garden or in a 30 cm deep pot • Sowing: between April and June or September-October • Harvesting: about two months after sowing
Prepare a garden bed that is well tilled with average organic matter. Ensure that the soil is well drained and rake the soil so it’s fine and crumbly – lumpy soil may bury seeds. Scatter seeds directly into the garden. Plant seeds ¼ to ½ inch under the soil in rows 12 inches apart. In a 30 cm deep pot, make two holes and sow 2-3 seeds in each. Lightly cover with potting soil and water.
When borage seedlings begin to grow, thin your plants to keep only one every 30 cm. Do not hesitate to transplant the seedlings in another place, they propagate very well. Don’t forget to water regularly. In hot weather, water abundantly and use mulch to protect the soil.
Borage herb harvest
About 2 months after sowing, borage flowers will be ready to harvest. The leaves may be picked at any time and used fresh after harvest. You can harvest leaves and flowers to add to salads or soups. Another great idea is to add borage flowers to ice cubes for your cocktails!
And then? Borage is a hardy annual, which means that the plant will die in a frost, but the seeds can survive in the frozen ground. The seed falls to the ground and the plant dies, but in the spring new borage plants emerge to take its place. Don’t want borage anymore? Simply pull up the plant in early summer before the seeds have dropped. And don’t forget to add the plants to your compost since borage speeds up decomposition.
